Buffalo, Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010 – Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd recorded eight tackles today in Buffalo’s 13-6 win over the Cleveland Browns. Byrd’s eight tackles today brings his total to 71 this season – third most on the team.

Byrd was recently the recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award, which is presented to a player on each NFL team who exemplifies a commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. The recipient symbolizes professionalism, great strength, dedication and serves as a community role model for others.

The second-year pro from the University of Oregon is committed to making a difference in the Buffalo community – and he’s looking for others in the area to do the same. Byrd has repeatedly said that there is a lot of good in the world, and now he’s making it so people in Buffalo know that random acts of kindness are not going unnoticed.

Last month, Byrd launched a new initiative called “Byrd Seed.” The initiative offers the chance for those doing good deeds to be recognized and rewarded. For the next year, Byrd and a group of his supporters will be armed with 500 vouchers featuring the “Byrd Seed” message and a coupon for a free movie pass at any of Dipson Theatre’s six Buffalo area locations. If any of Byrd’s supporters witness a random act of kindness, the person committing the good deed will immediately receive a “Byrd Seed” voucher and will be treated to a free movie ticket.

Anyone in the Buffalo area could be the recipient of one of these vouchers at any time, simply by committing an act of kindness witnessed by one of Byrd’s flock. It could be as simple as holding a door, giving someone the extra nickel needed at the cash register, or a good deed on a much grander scale.

“Byrd Seed” is a part of Byrd’s overall larger initiative called Louder Than Words. In April of this year, Byrd launched a social media campaign on Twitter and Facebook under the title: “youareLTW.” The pages give Byrd the opportunity to connect people from all over the world to random acts of kindness, and the two pages boast over 1,500 followers. Fans have been encouraged to visit either site to post any good deeds they see and help grow the community.
